Figure 2 - Specifying the STEP Type A STEP file is an international standard. STEP is an acronym for STandard for the Exchange of Product Model Data. The default STEP file you can export from Creo Parametric is the AP203 IS. To create the specific STEP AP203 Edition 2, you can set the configuration option step_export_format to ap203_e2 or you can select ap203_e2 from the Application protocol types drop-down list in the STEP Export Profile Settings profile editor.
A STEP AP203 E2 file enables an enterprise to exchange Process and Manufacturing Information, PMI, between different CAD systems. PMI includes dimensions, geometric tolerances, datum tags, surface finishes, weld symbols, and flag notes. A STEP file contains the PMI, and both the view state and layer state combined states are preserved. The STEP file is secondary content for the Technical Data Package, and is typically used by manufacturing.
Before saving the STEP, confirm that you have model items with asymmetrical tolerances set to mid-spec, assuming this is company standard. Display all dimension tolerances as desired. Once confirmed, save a STEP file from Creo Parametric by clicking File
Save As Save a Copy. Select STEP (*.stp) from the Type drop-down list.

You can specify additional options when saving a STEP file by clicking Options before saving the file. The STEP Export Profile Settings profile editor will appear and you can specify the following options:
-
Application protocol — Specifies the STEP application protocol for the export
-
Model Preferences — Specifies the representation of the exported part model and the file structure of the exported assembly models.
-
The Include section lets you specify whether of not to export: annotations, datums, quilts, facets, hidden entities, cable surfaces or parameters.
-
The Advanced section lets you specify more options to export such as: Material definition
-
Geometry and entity preferences
-
Assembly component preferences
Before saving the file, you can also select the Customize Export check box. When you click OK to save the file, an additional Export STEP dialog box appears that allows you to customize what layers or specific coordinate system to export.
