Understanding Datum Feature Symbol Annotation Elements

You can create datum feature symbols with different placement types.

  • Placement options: On Geometry

  • In dimensions

  • In geometric tolerances

  • Combined State 5_Datums

  • Any that reference a datum feature symbol.

  • System auto-increments the label name.

  • Add semantic references.

  • Additional options

Figure 2 - Make Datum Types There are three placement options for Datum Feature Symbols:

  • On geometry — Select a planar or cylindrical surface. The surfaces should be either flat or cylindrical as they are the feature of size used as a reference by CMM machines.

  • In a dimension.

  • In a geometric tolerance.

A Datum Feature Symbol is typically shown in two combined states:

  • In the 5_Datums combined state, they are all centrally located. The 5_Datums combined state contains only the datum feature symbols, even if they are attached to a dimension.

  • A datum feature symbol is also displayed in any combined state with a geometric tolerance that references that datum feature symbol.

Adding Semantic References

Click References

Figure from the References group in the ribbon to add additional semantic references to the datum feature symbol. Press CTRL, select the additional surfaces, and they display both in the graphics window and References dialog box.

Editing Datum Feature Symbols

You can edit the datum feature symbol at any time simply by selecting it. Once selected, you can extend the length of the leader, or drag the label to the other side of the selected surface. Should you need to change the datum feature symbol location to a different surface, you can right-click and select Change Reference, and select a different surface reference.

Additional Datum Feature Symbol Options

By default, the datum feature symbol is created using a straight leader. You can toggle the leader by clicking Elbow

You can add additional text outside of the datum feature symbol label using the Additional Text field in the Datum Feature ribbon. You can then click Rotate text position

Figure to move the additional text to any of the three sides where the datum feature symbol stem is not coming out of the box.

You can also click the Display group drop-down menu and select the Display per ASME Y14.5m-1982 check box to modify the datum feature symbol display in the graphics window.
